Institute for Political Studies of Defence and Military History

MILITARY HISTORY

  • The scientific research component is focused on supporting the objective of bringing historical experience to attention and leveraging the relevance of lessons learned from national and international military history for current developments in the international security environment. In this regard, the Institute for Political Studies of Defence and Military History (IPSDMH) is the only scientific research entity at the national level whose specific field of activity is research in the field of military history.

  • Along these lines, the activities carried out by IPSDMH cover in an exhaustive manner relevant historical issues and periods. The central objective of this approach is to research Romanian and universal military history in order to correctly evaluate the phenomenon of war, the role and contribution of the armed forces and the relations between the army and society.

  • Specifically, the activities carried out by IPSDMH in the field of military history research are reflected in the publication of studies and works dedicated to the main historical developments recorded in the last century (monographs, thematic albums, brochures, etc.).

  • In this context, the 'Review of Military History', a prestigious quarterly publication under the aegis of the Institute, dedicated exclusively to promoting military history research, is positioned in the editorial landscape. Its publications include studies and research materials by Romanian and foreign researchers, also including a consistent inventory of thematic issues dedicated to events of major importance for national and universal history.

  • A distinct research project developed by the Institute in recent years is the publication of collections of documents regarding the political-military relations developed between Romania and various states of the world, in the 19th and 20th centuries. Having a distinct character in the current scientific landscape, this approach comes to complete the national scientific inventory with relevant elements regarding the evolution of bilateral military relations and cooperation carried out by Romania. In this framework, the publication between 2023-2024 of the collection of documents regarding Romanian-Ottoman-Turkish Political and Military Relations 1878-1989 (2 vols.) is placed, with a volume on Romanian-Japanese political-military relations to be published in 2025.

  • At the same time, IPSDMH represents an important component of national scientific life, bringing a relevant contribution to the valorization of military history research within the framework of various scientific activities carried out at national level. It is also worth highlighting the role of IPSDMH in coordinating the activity of the Romanian Commission for Military History.

  • Also, the approach to research in the field of military history includes a substantial component of promoting this field both at the level of government administration structures and in relation to civil society. In this sense, it is also worth highlighting IPSDMH 's contribution to valorizing the importance of the main moments in Romanian history at the level of various civil and military educational entities.

  • A particularly important component of the activities carried out by IPSDMH is its participation in international scientific life, carried out through:
    • bilateral scientific cooperation with numerous institutions in the field from NATO, EU member states, the Republic of Moldova, Israel, China, India, the Republic of Serbia, etc.
    • organization of scientific activities with international participation (symposiums, round tables, conferences) focused on significant events in national and European history over the past century.
    • membership in international organizations in the field (e.g. International Commission of Military History, International Association of Byzantine Studies, Research Network of the Middle Ages in Central and Eastern Europe).

  • At the same time, ISPAIM is one of the founding institutions of the cooperation format between research structures in the field of military history in the Balkan region.
